Necessary Beauty

Many consider flowers to be an extravagant and wasteful spending of money for something that does not last more than a few days, and their purchase is usually limited to special occasions, condolences and the highly marketed red valentine rose.

In Europe people buy flowers more often, not because the Netherlands is the major producer, but because floral shops are on every corner. When shopping for groceries in Paris for example, a typical Frenchwoman while shopping for a Sunday luncheon will purchase a roast chicken, fresh salad, a baguette, wine, cheese and flowers for the table.

Never underestimate the power of beauty; flowers are a necessity in our daily lives. While internet purchases are fine in a pinch, it does not replace the more personal method of browsing. Browsing floral shops allow the consumer to be wooed by the species. No wonder men use flowers to woo women; they are a powerful tool. Women often buy flowers for themselves to beautify their living space or cheer up a friend. Many people understand that beauty is a necessity.

Nature is a necessity since man can not live without nature. Nature is beauty and nothing represents nature better than the flower: tulips, daisies, hydrangeas, carnations, lilies, roses, peonies; each species possesses an indescribable and profound beauty, reminding us that there is a divine plan. Bringing flowers into our homes reminds us that we are a part of the plan and not apart from nature.

The ancient Greeks doted on expectant mothers removing them from the bustle of everyday life to relax and enjoy the process of the ultimate creation. They surrounded her with beautiful statues and flowers believing in the positive effect on the unborn child. Beauty is a necessity.

Times have changed, however, and few have the luxury of gathering wildflowers in their own neighborhoods. Luckily, floriculture is on the rise and floral shops are increasing in neighborhoods around the country. Modern florists combine new ideas in floral arrangements adding an original twist to the common bouquet. By pairing unexpected species and using longer lasting foliage todays floral arrangements are more unique than ever before.

So, next time the dreaded task of grocery shopping presents itself, do not forget to bring home the very necessary beauty of fresh cut flowers.
